Debonair Prussian Rake Klaus Van Maasten has long been a thorn in the side of the British allies of The Second Compact.

A master of disguise, and an accomplished womaniser, Van Maasten's perfect English accent has allowed him to infiltrate polite society in London and the Home Counties. His affair with the wife of the best friend of The Prince of Wales was his masterstroke. Lady Richmond only realised her betrayal when extremely accurate reports of her assignations appeared in the scandal sheets.

"She and her husband oppose the march of industry", Van Maasten told The Daily Sketch. "They view the growth of the manufacturing economy as a threat to their privileged position and decadent, open relationship."

Van Maasten's ally, Birgitta Kaufmann, had stitched up The Prince of Wales himself a week earlier. The Queen was not amused, and became even more inclined to take the counsel of The Steam Lords, led by Lord Standish.

Van Maasten then moved on to another in Bertie's court, Lord Lindsay Pengellon, stealing papers from his home near Brighton. He fled with them to Paris, where he hopes to pass them to Kaufmann before returning to London.

Allies: Birgitta Kaufmann, Hubert Marceau.
